I strongly believe that internet marketing should be included in a traditional marketing plan. Internet Marketing is the marketing of products/services over the internet. For many businesses, the only marketing they do is internet marketing. This method is not successful for all types of businesses but for many, all the marketing that is needed.

Marketing Strategy

Before attempting any marketing plan, you should first address your marketing strategy. Your marketing strategy is what guides and directs your marketing plan, traditional or internet. If you would like details on the differences between a strategy and plan please read: Marketing Strategy vs. Marketing Plan and get your copy of the Marketing Strategy Checklist.

Marketing Plans

The biggest difference between traditional marketing plan and an internet marketing plan is the tools used to market your services/products and the method of measuring the return on investment (ROI). I will discuss ROI in detail in a later post.

The planning process is the same. A business should start with a strategy, identify its target customer, and then identify what (and when) tools will be used to market.

Tools

Web development

Social Media

Some additional differences:

  • No time-zone restrictions
    - Marketing over the internet does not limit you to advertise during certain time periods.
    - It is viewable all over the world.
  • Internet marketing is generally more economical.
    - Traditional marketing methods can cost thousands.
  • More work with less manpower.
    - Since internet marketing is not a trade skill it is easier to find a professional who can market on several internet tools or do the marketing yourself.

  1. Hi Monyelle,

is there still such a thing as traditional marketing ? Even traditional companies have to be on the internet – that’s rather marketing on the internet than internet marketing.

On the other hand, internet marketers tend to create some type of parallel universe called internet – which it is not.

Sounds mundane but people are still people.

    Thanks for sharing your insights.

      Oliver,

There definately is still a need for traditional marketing. My background and personal time is spent in the arts. Its very hard to transition marketing for them fully or primarily to internet marketing in that field. They definitely still benefit from marketing online but it’s a completely different arena that still heavily needs traditional marketing platforms, at the moment.

Thank you for reading and for your comment.

  2. Monyelle,

I love the possibilities that have opened up with the advent of internet marketing. The same basic principles still apply as pre-internet, but with certain additional elements.

One key point which you included here is the cost – for almost nothing, it’s possible to reach a large target audience across the world – this has virtually never been possible before in the history of advertising and marketing. You have to learn how to do it of course, but it’s really not that hard…

    Thanks for sharing your insights,

    Jym
